Femto Laser Cataract Surgery vs Phaco: What Is the Difference?

If you or a parent in Thane has been advised cataract surgery, you may have heard two terms: “phaco” and “femto laser” (sometimes called robotic or bladeless cataract surgery). Both are modern, safe and effective. This guide explains, honestly and simply, how they differ and who benefits most from each.

First, how does cataract surgery work?

Every cataract operation has three main steps:

  1. Make small openingsin the eye.
  2. Open the lens capsule(a thin bag that holds the natural lens) and break up the cloudy lens so it can be removed.
  3. Insert a clear artificial lens (IOL)in its place.

The difference between phaco and femto laser is mainly in how steps 1 and 2 are done.

Phaco (phacoemulsification)

In phaco surgery, the surgeon makes a tiny incision of about 2.2 to 2.8 mm with a fine blade and opens the lens capsule by hand. Ultrasound energy then breaks up and removes the cataract. No stitches are needed. Phaco has been the global standard for decades and gives excellent results in skilled hands.

Femto laser-assisted cataract surgery (FLACS)

In femto laser-assisted surgery, a femtosecond laser performs several steps automatically, guided by detailed imaging of your eye:

  • Creates the corneal incisions without a blade
  • Makes a perfectly circular opening in the lens capsule
  • Pre-softens and divides the cataract, so less ultrasound energy is needed to remove it
  • Can make tiny relaxing incisions to reduce astigmatism (cylindrical power)

At Isha Netralaya, this is combined with the Argos AI image-guided system for precise measurement and planning, and Centurion technology for smooth lens removal.

Who benefits most from femto laser surgery?

Femto laser-assisted surgery is especially worth considering if you:

  • Are choosing a premium lens(multifocal, EDOF or toric), where precise centring and measurement matter most
  • Have astigmatism(cylindrical power)
  • Have a dense cataract, where using less ultrasound energy can be gentler on the eye
  • Simply want the most technologically advanced, bladeless optionavailable

Is phaco still a good option?

Absolutely. Large studies have found that phaco and femto laser surgery both give excellent, comparable visual results for most patients. Phaco is a proven, cost-effective technique, and Isha Netralaya’s surgeons perform both. The choice depends on your eyes, your lens, your budget and your surgeon’s advice, not on marketing.

What recovery looks like

With either technique, most patients:

  • See clearly within 24 to 48 hours
  • Return to normal daily activities within a few days
  • Use eye drops for a few weeks
  • Avoid rubbing the eye, swimming, and dust or smoke for a short while
